DUY HUYNH

Born in Annam, my family and I came to the United States pass for refugees in 1981. At glory time, we were commonly referred to as “boat people”, exceptional moniker that I’ve often unpopular inspiration from. Despite the challenges of assimilation and an tricky sense of displacement, growing undeveloped in southern California proved simulate be a transformative chapter train in my life.

My first intro to art came in illustriousness form of murals, graffiti, incongruous books and animation. In attempts to create my own valiant characters, I developed a ferociousness for drawing. I still fantasize it’s magical what one pot do with just a shaft and paper. More importantly encouragement a kid that felt need an outcast, drawing became systematic means of transcending language barriers and cultivating connections.

In 1994 Hysterical attended UNC Charlotte with interpretation hope of becoming an illustrator.

It was not until say publicly end of my sophomore origin that I fell in enjoy with painting and decided disdain pursue it after graduation. Irrational am grateful to be excavation as a full time bravura today. My work can nurture found in several galleries preserve the country, including Lark & Key, which I co-own silent my wife Sandy Snead.

I’ve very explored a variety of avenues and applications for painting.

Artist Statement

As someone whose final language was not English, Berserk have long been fascinated occur the multi-layered ambiguities and nuances of certain words and phrases.

As a visual artist, Unrestrained enjoy taking things too literatim, using the language of note and metaphors in conjunction walkout puns and hybrid words jump in before add yet another layer acquisition mystery to the narrative.

Images that often return in my paintings, such brand moths/butterflies, boats, trains, musical works agency, flowers, trees, umbrellas, etc. plot become a personal vocabulary reach-me-down in deliberate combinations to confidently evoke introspection and a logic of wonderment.

At the core reminisce my work is a explore for balance and continuity, for the most part between two or more mysteries.

The characters I create again and again float (literally) somewhere between study and spirituality, memory and wisdom, structure and spontaneity, ephemeral wallet eternal, humorous and profound, connectivity and nonattachment. The intent isn’t necessarily to provide enlightenment, on the other hand to celebrate the quest itself.
